Report, Silver Spray, Poole
Finally, after 5 cancelled trips in 2008, I managed to get out on the 1st charter of the year!
We had planned on fishing the 'Shambles' bank for plaice and perhaps an early turbot, but the weather once again turned against us and we decided to abandon the shambles and tucked in closer to shore. With a strong biting wind and a choppy sea, Silver Spray offered us a safe & stable platform to fish from, and Andy kept the tea and coffee coming at rgular intervals. The first baits hit the bottom and within minutes, up came the first obligatory dogfish, then another and another! Soon after a lovely spotted ray turned up, along with a three bearded rockling.
With the weather deteriorating Andy moved us onto one of his undulate ray marks. Unfortunately none showed up, but we were kept busy with a steady stream of species. Three quarters of the way through the session, while using whole squid bait, I was continuously having bream type bites - a bit early I thought but I quickly changed over, to see what they were. I did manage to winkle out a few pout and poor cod, and then one of the guy's on the boat brought in the 1st black bream of the season!
That was the only one of the trip! The weather had worsened again, Portland coastguards reported winds of force 8 - 9, so it was time to pack up for the day, and Andy guided Silver Spray back home through the thousands of white horses!
A very successful 'alternative' trip with the capture of the following species (not all by me!);

Cefn Sidan, Carmarthenshire
Cefn Sidan
Known Species - Bass, Flonder, Whiting, Dabs, Golden Grey Mullet etc
A very long, very flat beach, best to stay mobile when fishing Cefn Sidan. There are a number of preferred marks further North, but most require a long hike, although the whole length of beach will produce fish.

Report, Llys-y-Fran Reservoir
Date - 03/03/08
Venue - Llys-y-Fran Reservoir
Species Caught - Rainbow Trout.

Steve with the best fish of the day - 3lb 10oz
With the reservoir season opening on March 1st, a few friends and myself took the time out for some flyfishing afloat.
The first drift of the day resulted in a hooked and lost fish for Steve, and a pull for me, so it was looking promising. The second drift started with a bang, with Steve into another fish and myself hooking up while trying to net Steve's fish. After a few minutes, Steve dropped his fish and we realised that there were 2 fish on the end of my line - both were landed and went around 1lb 8oz each.
Another couple of drifts close to the shore, resulted in a few more fish and a lot more takes, until the bank anglers turned up and pushed us further out into deeper water and subsequently no fish for a few hours.
We did manage to get back into the fish during the last hour or so, and finished off the day with a cracking fish of 3lb 10oz, which put up an excellent account for itself (or was Steve milking it?!).
Decent day afloat and a solid start to the new season.

Report, Hobbs Point
Date - 01/03/08

Venue - Hobbs Point
Time - 3pm - 4pm
Species caught - Rock & Black Goby
Happy St Davids Day. With a few things needed for the boat for the coming summer, I popped down Kelpies in Pembroke Dock, and snuck the rod in the car. An hour fishing down the side of Hobbs resulted in only gobies (both rock and black). The water was very murky, and wind was bitterly cold - not ideal conditions, but at least it wasn't a blank!
Milford Docks, Pembrokeshire

Known Species - Whiting, Conger, Bass, Pollack, Pout, Poor Cod, Rockling, Coalfish, Various Wrasse, Mackerel, Various Mini Species etc
