Red bandfish

Works species comp 2014 - Weymouth - 16/10/14

Weather was again against us, really restricting where the 4 boats could take us.  Having previously won the event on Wild Frontier, I was confident that we'd have a chance again this year.

To cut a long story short - I was cruising up until about 12.30 (then the wheels came off!!).  Having already boated whiting, scad, pout, poor cod, ballan wrasse, goldsinny wrasse, and a black goby, Clem gave us a swift drift or 2 over the red bandfish mark (a species I've only aught once before - a fluke out of Plymouth about 6 years ago!).

On the 1st drift, having tackled up right for them - I had a rattle as soon this fella broke the surface!  Stunning!

To prove it wasn't a fluke - I picked up my 2nd on the next drift.  With only 3 red bandfish caught, and several species (and numbers) in the bag already - I was cruising!

We then targeted pollack (my Weymouth nemesis!) - having not caught one for about 5 years at the venue - I was chuffed to have hooked one, brought it to the surface, and lifted it 4 foot out of the water and a foot from my hand..........before it fell off the hook and swam back down to the depths!!!  (12 points down the pan!) - doh!

Anyway - after that I added more numbers but only dogfish to my species tally.  Others meanwhile boated huss, tope, mackerel and bream.

I still managed to finish 3rd on the boat out of 10, with both those beating me finishing in the overall top 3.

All in all a good day, and I'm now happy that I have a picture of a red bandfish!
